The Washington Nationals franchise is owned by Ted Lerner, who purchased the team in 2006 for $450 million dollars. Lerner is a real estate developer and businessman who has been involved in many high-profile developments in the Washington, D.C., area.
Lerner also owns several other businesses in the Washington area, including real estate development firm Lerner Enterprises and a minority stake in the Washington Wizards NBA franchise. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns and operates both the Nationals and the Wizards.

Where Did The Team Get Their Name?
The team’s name originates from the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP), founded in 1858 and is often considered the first organized baseball league. The name “Nationals” also refers to the old Washington Senators team that played in the American Association from 1891 to 1899 and the National League from 1899 to 1960.
The franchise moved from Montreal, where they were known as the Expos, after the 2004 season. They thus became the first MLB franchise to relocate since 1993, when the Milwaukee Brewers moved from Seattle (now the home of the Mariners).
The History of the Nats
In 1969, Major League Baseball expanded and granted an expansion franchise to Washington, D.C., then known as the Montreal Expos. The Expos were a fairly successful franchise in Montreal, making five playoff appearances from 1981 to 1994 and winning two NL East titles. However, due to financial difficulties, the franchise was relocated to Washington in 2005 and renamed the Nationals.
Since then, the Nats have made five playoff appearances and won four division titles since 2006. In 2019, they won their first-ever World Series title by defeating the Houston Astros 4-3 in an epic seven-game series that went down as one of the greatest World Series games ever played.
